Already in mid-October, freight drivers will face significant adjustments to their usual logistics routes. The A59 autobahn in the direction of Leverkusen will be completely closed to traffic for a long period - eight months. The start of work has been moved to an earlier date due to the emergency condition of the road.
Closure schedule and stages:
The first restrictions will come into force on the night of October 15. At this point, the section of road between the "Düsseldorf-Süd" junction and the exit to "Richrath" will be blocked. Just five days later, the repair zone will be expanded, and traffic will be closed all the way to the approaches to Monheim.
Reason for the early start of repairs:
The reason for such urgent work is the deplorable state of the concrete pavement on the A59, the condition of which was described as unsatisfactory. The authorities decided not to wait for the completion of reconstruction on the parallel A3 motorway, which was postponed to 2026. This measure is forced and aimed at guaranteeing the safety of all road users. How to detour: Alternative routes via the A3 and A542 autobahns are officially provided as detours. Transport operators are strongly advised to now review their route maps and delivery time frames.
What to expect in the future and what carriers should consider:
The first phase of large-scale reconstruction will take, according to preliminary estimates, eight months. After its completion, traffic will be opened in one lane, after which construction equipment will switch to the opposite side of the road - in the direction of Düsseldorf. Key recommendation for carriers: detour routes bypassing the A59 should be included in logistics schemes until the summer of 2026. It is important to consider that travel on alternative roads may lead to an increase in travel time and will require adjustments to delivery schedules.
