Since the end of December 2025, radical changes to speeding penalties have come into force in France. Driving at a speed exceeding the permitted limit by more than 50 km/h is now classified not as an administrative offence but as a criminal offence.
The new sanctions include:
· Up to 3 months' imprisonment
· A fine of up to €3,750
· A criminal record entry
· Confiscation of the vehicle
· Suspension of the driving licence for up to 3 years
Who the new rules affect:
The changes apply to all drivers on French territory, including foreign nationals such as German lorry drivers and tourists.
International carriers and drivers planning journeys through France are strongly advised to monitor their speed carefully, especially on motorways and rural roads where the risk of significant excess speed is highest.
