On Sunday evening, police in Traunstein encountered a Romanian truck driver walking along the autobahn towards Munich. The man had parked his articulated lorry at a rest stop by Lake Chiemsee for a mandatory break. When he ran out of cigarettes, he decided to walk to a petrol station.
The navigation app on his phone showed him the fastest route – straight along the autobahn. Several drivers reported a person in a high-visibility vest on the carriageway, prompting police to restrict traffic and remove him from the motorway.
A check revealed the driver had a blood alcohol level of approximately 2.0 per mille. He explained that he had not been driving due to the Sunday truck driving ban. Police prohibited him from continuing his journey, confiscated his keys, but allowed him to buy cigarettes.
